About Us

Small, welcoming city located in Western Clark County with a vibrant downtown and great people. Please come and visit, but you might want to stay a lifetime!
Incorporated as a village in 1831, New Carlisle was originally called Monroe and established as York in 1810. The Post Office has been operational since 1828. New Carlisle enjoys a rich history that includes many local stories of early American and Indian life. More recent history involves the infamous John Dillinger’s robbery of the New Carlisle National Bank on June 21, 1933. The building stands to this day at the southeast corner of Main Street and Jefferson Street (state routes 235 and 571). New Carlisle was incorporated as a city in 1973, and currently has a population of about 5,800 people.
